Sciatica (Sciatica): Symptoms, Causes & Treatment

Sciatica is a common lower back problem. The sciatic nerve extends from the lower back to the legs. As long as anyone of the parts is under abnormal pressure, it can cause sciatica. This pressure is usually caused by spinal disc prolapse.

Sciatica (Sciatica): Symptoms, Causes & Treatment

Symptom

  • Suddenly felt pain in the waist after lifting a heavy object or bending over and straightening.
  • The patient felt low back pain and leg pain many times, and the situation worsened every time. After examination, it was found that the lesion originated from the lumbar spine.
  • When the nerve is compressed, the nerves behind the thigh are affected to produce a burst of pain. The patient feels tingling or burning pain along the sensory nerve.

Cause

  • This disease can be caused by nerve compression or damage (such as bone fragmentation or disc herniation), but sometimes there is no apparent cause.
  • Suddenly lifting heavy objects or pushing hard.
  • Nerve damage due to lack of vitamin B 12 and thiamine can also cause neuralgia. Besides, people with diabetes may also have neuralgia.

Nursing at home

  • Lay on a wooden board bed or the ground to rest, add a thin pad of two to four inches thick if necessary.
  • Take appropriate analgesic medicine.
  • Applying a hot water bottle to the affected area or irradiating the affected area with infrared light can alleviate the symptoms.
  • If the pain is extreme, you should consult a doctor.

Treatment

  • The doctor will let the patient take strong painkillers and arrange for the patient to receive physical therapy.
  • Some patients need to seal the back with a cast back clip to fix the spine's position.
  • Massage can be cited with the consent of the doctor.
  • In extremely severe cases, doctors will consider surgery.

Prevention

When lifting heavy objects, keep your knees bent and your back straight, and do not twist your body to reduce the risk of disc herniation.
